            		LINCOLN -- Helen M. Newman, 93, of 
			Lincoln, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at 3:10 p.m. at St. John's 
			Hospice in Springfield. 
					
							Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at 
							Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. A 
							prayer service will follow at 7 p.m.  |

							will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Church, 
							with the Rev. Anthony Lee officiating. 
							
							Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. 
							Mrs. Newman retired from employment with the 
							state of Illinois. In 1957 she became the first 
							woman to hold the position of teller for the state 
							treasurer's office. 
							She was born March 18, 1916, in New Holland to 
							Louis and Helena Krusemark Berns. She married 
							Richard J. Newman on June 23, 1936, in Lincoln. He 
							preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 1988.  
							
							She is survived by two daughters, Martha Ann 
							"Marty" (and Arthur) Neitzel of Lincoln and Larry 
							(and Karen) Lohrenz of Lincoln; five grandchildren; 
							12 great-grandchildren; and two 
							great-great-grandchildren. 
							She was also preceded in death by one son, 
							Richard L. Newman; one brother, Raymond "Rusty" 
							Berns; and six sisters, Viola Morris, Emma Blaum, 
							Edna Harnacke, Irma Worth, Florence Badgett and 
							Donna Belle Berns. She was the last of her immediate

							She was a member of Holy Family Church of Lincoln. 
							She was Logan County Republican chairwoman for 30 
							years, working with Joe Sapp. 
							Memorials may be made to Holy Family Church or 
							Carroll School.
