A low pressure system was continuing to track eastward through eastern Canada, dragging a cold front through the eastern U.S. This system was continuing to pull moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico, and in combination with warm conditions, the front would trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters said some of these storms might turn severe as the system had a history of producing damaging winds, large hail and periods of heavy rain. Rainfall totals from the Ohio River Valley to the Gulf of Mexico were expected to range between a quarter and half of an inch, with over an inch likely in areas of severe storm development. The entire East Coast would remain in the 70s and 80s Tuesday.

Behind this system in the Plains, another low pressure system would strengthen as it quickly moved off the central Rockies. This system would also push in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and create a moist warm front that would kick up moderate to heavy storms over the central and southern Plains. Forecasters said these storms may reach into the northern Plains and upper Midwest by evening. The southern Plains would see highs in the 90s, while the northern and central Plains would remain in the 80s.

Out West, a low pressure system moved into the Pacific Northwest and pushed the dominating ridge of high pressure eastward. This would bring some light and scattered showers to Oregon and Washington, while most of California would remain dry with a few patchy clouds. Most of the West Coast would remain in the 60s and 70s Tuesday.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 27 degrees at Big Piney, Wyo., to a high of 93 degrees at Chesapeake, Va.
