[June 08, 2010]  (AP)  Severe weather was continuing to sweep through the central U.S. on Tuesday, while the rest of the country would remain relatively inactive.

A low pressure system that intensified as it moved off the Rockies would continue pushing a strong warm front through the Midwest throughout the day. This system would trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms over the upper and mid-Mississippi River Valley, with most areas seeing less than a quarter of an inch of rain, but up to an inch in areas of thunderstorms. This system had a history of producing severe weather including large hail and damaging winds. The upper Midwest would see highs in the mid-60s, while forecasters said the mid-Mississippi Valley might reach into the 90s.

Behind this system, forecasters said scattered showers might linger over the northern and central Plains. Counterclockwise flow around this low would continue pushing moisture into the region, kicking up some light rain, but would not produce thunderstorms. Highs would remain in the 70s and 80s over the northern and central Plains, while the southern Plains would reach into the 100s again.

Behind this system in the West, a ridge of high pressure would bring another mild weather day to the West Coast. Coastal regions would see some morning clouds, while inland regions would be warm and dry. A low pressure system approaching from the west would reach the Pacific Northwest late Tuesday night, allowing for light showers to return.

Back East, a high pressure would continue dominating the weather over the East Coast. This would bring another warm and sunny day, with the Northeast reaching into the 70s and the Southeast seeing highs in the 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 29 degrees at Land O'Lakes, Wis., to a high of 109 degrees at Goodyear, Ariz.
