Mr. Nichols was employed by the Illinois
State Police from 1950 until 1966. He was elected to
be the Logan County sheriff from 1966 until 1970. He
later was employed at the Logan Correctional Center,
retiring in 1987 as a stationary fireman. He also
farmed and raised shorthorn cattle.
He served in the U.S. Marines in the South
Pacific during World War II.
He was born Sept. 11, 1921, in rural Waynesville.
His parents were Chester Arthur and Anna Mari Baker
Nichols. He married Betty Liesman on Sept. 14, 1954.
He is survived by his wife; his children, Steve
(and Cindy) Nichols of Elkhart, David Nichols of
Springfield and Suzann (and Mark) Maxheimer of
Elkhart; three grandchildren, Jessica Maxheimer,
Garret Maxheimer and Whitney Nichols; and one
sister, Josephine Rich of Pekin.
Five brothers and two sisters preceded him in
death.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in
Lincoln, American Legion Post 263 and Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 1756.
He enjoyed harness racing.
