[May 10, 2010]  (AP)  The first of two Pacific storms was forecast to move out of the West and into the Plains with more unsettling weather activity Monday.

As the system progressed eastward, flow around the system would draw warm moisture from the Gulf of Mexico northward into the central U.S. This enhanced surge of moisture would interact with fronts associated with the system to produce numerous showers and thunderstorms and possible severe thunderstorms across the southern and central Plains and the mid-Mississippi Valley.

There was a moderate risk of severe weather activity with possible tornadoes and large hail over portions of Kansas and Oklahoma. Residents of these areas were urged to monitor their local weather activity throughout the day.

Behind this system, the second and stronger Pacific storm was expected to hit northern California and Oregon with cooler temperatures, strong winds and more precipitation. Moderate rainfall totals were expected near the coasts and across the valleys of these regions, while more widespread snowfall was expected across the higher elevations, particularly the Sierras.

Finally, in the East, chilly temperatures would remain over the Great Lakes and the Northeast as a strong ridge of high pressure settled over the Eastern Seaboard.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 17 degrees at Spincich Lake, Mich., to a high of 99 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
