A Resolution in Recognition of
National Crime Victims' Rights Week
WHEREAS, every crime has a victim who suffers some harm at the
hands of the offender -- be it physical, financial, psychological or
emotional, and
WHEREAS, victims of crime have the following rights: to be
treated with fairness, dignity and respect, to be protected from
intimidation, to be informed about the progress of their case
through the criminal justice system, to receive compensation for
damages and to have equal treatment in court, and
WHEREAS, treating victims with dignity serves the public interest
by engaging victims in the criminal justice system, inspiring
respect for public authorities and promoting confidence in public
safety, and
WHEREAS, the Illinois Attorney General's Office provides grant
funding to Logan County for victim and witness services and victim
advocacy, with funds used
to supplement the salary of a full-time Victim/Witness
Coordinator who provides direct services to victims of violent
crime, and
WHEREAS, in the last year the Victim Witness Coordinator has
assisted more than 95 Logan County residents who have been victims
or witnesses of crime and has helped several victims prepare a
Victim Impact Statement which is used by judges in determining
appropriate sentences and fair restitution orders, and

WHEREAS, innocent victims of crime and their families in Logan
County have applied for financial assistance through the state's
Crime Victims' Compensation Fund,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Logan County Board
declare April 18-24, 2010 as National Crime Victims' Rights Week in
Logan County to increase awareness of the foundation of victims'
rights -- fairness, dignity, and respect -- and to honor crime
victims and those who advocate on their behalf.
