Liu Xiaobo, a 54-year-old literary critic, is serving an 11-year sentence for subversion imposed in December after he co-authored a bold appeal known as Charter 08 calling for reforms to the country's single-party communist political system. In a letter issued at the start of Ban's four-nation trip to Asia, Human Rights Watch said his visit came at a time when China's rights advocates and their supporters are increasingly under pressure by the government. In addition to expressing concern over Liu and his wife, Ban should urge the government to "roll back its constraints on human rights defenders, including civil society groups and lawyers," said the letter, signed by the group's Asia Advocacy Director Sophie Richardson.
