[October 02, 2010]  SPRINGFIELD -- Whether at work, home or school, millions of Americans use a computer and the Internet each day. This technology has provided almost limitless opportunities, while creating risks that range from mere inconveniences to serious threats such identity theft and child safety. To help people understand those risks and what they can do to prevent problems, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency has launched a new online cyber-safety resource.

The Cyber Safety section on the state's Ready Illinois website was recently expanded to provide information and links to dozens of resources for the safe use of computers and the Internet at home and businesses, as well as guidance for parents and children about online safety. The site also offers information technology "best practices," including an IT policy template, sample policies and guidance on how to avoid risks associated with the storage of information on photocopiers, fax machines and printers.

"Computers and the Internet are part of our everyday life," said IEMA Interim Director Joe Klinger. "With the click of a mouse, we can make purchases, communicate with friends and family around the world, and perform a myriad of business functions. The Cyber Safety section offers valuable resources on how to protect your computer, your personal information, your business operations and, most importantly, your children, from cyber risks."

The revised Cyber Safety section on the Ready Illinois website was a collaborative effort by the Illinois Terrorism Task Force's Cyber Initiative Workgroup, which brought together subject matter experts from the public, private, educational and industrial sectors.

The Ready Illinois website offers a one-stop location for information about disaster preparedness, what to do during a disaster and steps for recovery after a disaster.
