[October 08, 2010] (AP) The most active weather in the country Friday was expected to be in the West.

A strong low pressure system was forecast to begin the day over the Great Basin before moving eastward as the day progressed. While there would not be a tremendous amount of moisture associated with this feature, rain and some high-elevation snow was expected to fall from the Rockies through the Intermountain West. In addition, a cold front would move into the Northwest and instigate areas of rain, mostly along the coast of Washington.

To the south, a high pressure system was forecast to produce dry and warming temperatures in California that would last through the weekend.

In the East, breezy, but dry conditions were expected through the Northeast. The one exception to this may be in Maine, where a few showers are possible.

Another ridge of high pressure was forecast to move through the Plains and into the Mississippi Valley by the end of the day. This would translate to warm temperatures in the Plains and mild conditions in the Southeast.

The Northeast would rise into the 50s, 60s and 70s, while the Southeast would see temperatures in the 70s, 80s and some 90s. The Plains were expected to rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest would see temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Charleston, Nev., to a high of 93 degrees at Wharton, Texas.
