Dan
Johnson (left) and Paul Wagahoft from Long Elevator Co. work on
bringing voice to the elevator at Friendship Manor.
The software will allow vision-impaired residents to hear what direction and floor
the elevator is moving to, and it will give directions in case of a
fire. The grant was funded by the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act given to Illinois and administered by the
Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Rehabilitation
Services, Bureau of Blind
Services.

This May 9 photo provided by Shawanna Lumsey shows
her and her son,
Jordan, in Little Rock, Ark., on Mother's Day. She was shackled to a hospital
bed while giving birth to her son in 2003 when she was serving time for credit
card fraud. Released in 2004, she sued the state prison system, saying that
the shackling -- while she was experiencing severe contractions -- caused lasting
hip and back injuries. In July, a federal jury found that her civil rights
had been violated and awarded her $1. She says her son is thriving and she is
proud of pursuing the lawsuit despite the nominal award. A report being released
Thursday by the National Women's Law Center and the Rebecca
Project for Human Rights says the number of women in America's state prisons has
reached a record high, yet many states have inadequate policies for dealing with
the large portion of them who have children or are pregnant.

In this photo taken June 28, a sculpture of Gollum,
the villainous "Lord of the Rings" hobbit, stands in front of a welcome
sign in Hobbiton Town, Matamata, New Zealand. New Zealand may lose the
filming of "The Hobbit" movies, with financial backers Warner Brothers
making arrangements to shift the production offshore after a stalemate
between director Peter Jackson's production company, Wingnut Films, and
the union Actors' Equity over pay deals for actors in the New Zealand
$660 million (U.S. $500 million) two-film prequel to the highly
successful "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
