Violence has dramatically subsided in Iraq since 2008, but insurgents still frequently strike with lethal force, targeting the country's security forces, government institutions and civilians. In a separate development, a senior Iraqi military intelligence official said Wednesday that Iraq opened an investigation into an incident on the previous day when an Iraqi soldier opened fire on a group of American troops protecting one of their commanders during a visit to an Iraqi army base. Two American soldiers were killed and nine others were wounded in the attack. The two were the first U.S. servicemen to die since President Barack Obama declared an end to combat operations in Iraq last week. The initial findings show that the assailant was a Kurdish member of Iraq's special forces and has participated in joint patrols and raids with U.S. troops, the Iraqi official said. The U.S. military said in a statement on Wednesday it was investigating Tuesday's shooting and called the attack a "deliberate act." The names of the two slain soldiers were being withheld until their families were notified.
