[September 13, 2010]  (AP) -- A cold front was to continue sweeping across the nation Saturday, kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms.

A low pressure system was expected to develop in the northern Rockies and take a northeastward turn into Canada. Flow around the system was to continue pushing a cold front through the central U.S.

The system was forecast to spread scattered showers and thunderstorms from the upper Midwest to the mid-Mississippi River Valley and was to wrap around to the west into the southern Plains.

Isolated storms were expected to develop, with some turning severe. The system has a history of producing damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall. Flooding was expected to remain a concern of the lower and mid-Mississippi River Valley due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine that brought heavy rain showers the past few days.

To the east of this front, high pressure was to dominate over the East Coast, allowing for sunny skies and dry conditions. A pleasant day was expected over the Northeast and New England with highs in the mid-60s to mid-70s. The Southeast, however, was to remain hot and humid with highs in the 90s, as ample moisture lingered over the region.

Out West, high pressure was to prevail over the Rockies and West Coast. It was expected to continue bringing favorable conditions for rapid fire spread. However, winds across Colorado were expected to significantly reduce.

In New Mexico, dry surface conditions with expected 35-40 mph wind gusts were forecast to bring dangerous fire weather. Fire weather advisories were issued over the state.

The West Coast was forecast to remain sunny, warm, and pleasant with a few coastal clouds.
