BLOOMINGTON -- The Autism Society of
McLean County is hosting its fourth annual Run-Walk for Autism on
Saturday. The funds raised from this event help the organization
achieve its goal of strengthening families’ access to and enjoyment
of community programs, services and events that help to build life
skills. It is crucial for people with autism to have opportunities
to develop the skills they will need in school, college and the work
force.

Autism spectrum disorder affects 1 in 110 8-year-olds, according to
the Centers for Disease Control. Autism is a developmental disorder
that affects socialization, language and behavior. With the proper
supports, people with autism can lead full and meaningful lives.
Through athletic programs, drama, summer camps, educational
grants, college preparation supports, recreational activities and
employment advocacy, the Autism Society is able to enrich the lives
of people living with autism. The organization also hopes to raise
the awareness of autism in the community.
The Autism Society of McLean County hopes to raise $20,000 with
this event and would like to exceed last year’s participation
numbers of 125 runners and 400 walkers.
