Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln. Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lincoln
Christian Church, with Brandon Boyd officiating.
Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mrs. McCue retired from Abraham Lincoln Memorial
Hospital, where she held several positions from 1962
to 1992. She previously worked for the Lincoln Daily
Courier.
She was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Pittsfield. Her
parents were Arthur Bentley Caughlan and Agnes
Porter Caughlan. She married Richard F. McCue of
Elkhart on June 14, 1947, in Lincoln. He preceded
her in death on Feb. 13, 1992.
She is survived by three sons, Richard (and wife
Elaine) of Spartanburg, S.C., Robert (and Diana) of
Greensboro, N.C., and Larry of New York, N.Y.; two
daughters, Carol Lippo (and husband Bruce) of
Rolling Meadows and Patricia Ballard (and Ron) of
Germantown Hills; one brother, John A. Caughlan of
Webster Groves, Mo.; six grandchildren; five
stepgrandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren;
nephews Thomas, Charles and George; and her
companion, Richard "Dick" Eimer of Lincoln.
She was also preceded in death by a nephew, James
Caughlan, earlier this year.
She graduated from Pittsfield Community High
School. During World War II she completed a two-year
accelerated course in journalism at the University
of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. She worked as a
reporter for the Daily Illini while a student.
In June 1945, she began worked at the Lincoln
Daily Courier as a reporter and photographer. She
left the Courier in August 1948 to start a family,
though for many years she filled in for Courier
journalist Larry Shroyer and wrote for area
newspapers and radio stations.
She started working at Abraham Lincoln Memorial
Hospital in the campaign office when the hospital
was raising funds to build the east wing. She began
the hospital newsletter in 1966 and served as its
editor, writer and photographer until her
retirement. She served as director of volunteer
services and special services from 1972 until 1985,
when she was named director of development and
marketing. She was the director of marketing and
public relations at the time of her retirement.
She was a member of the Illinois Society for
Directors of Volunteer Services for over 13 years
and served as president for one year. In 1981 she
was named Illinois Director of the Year.
She served one year on the Illinois Hospital
Association annual meeting planning committee. She
was a member of the Illinois Hospital Public
Relations Society and the American Hospital Public
Relations Society. She was a life member of ALMH and
the ALMH Auxiliary.

Among her other accomplishments:

Served several years on the United Way board and
was president in 1974. She was its first female
president.

Named Courier Citizen of the Month for March
1975 and served on the Citizen of the Year award
board in 1992.

Was a 25-year member of Zonta Club and was a
delegate to the Zonta International Convention
in Washington, D.C., when she was the club
president.

Served six years on the Professional Advisory
Committee for the Logan County Health
Department.

Served on the boards of the Logan County
chapters of the American Cancer Society and the
American Red Cross. For 10 years was canteen
chairman for the Red Cross blood collections in
Lincoln and served several years as blood
services co-chairman. Continued serving as a Red
Cross collections volunteer for many years. In
later years was a driver for the American Cancer
society, taking patients to Springfield and
other area hospitals for treatment.

Past president of the
Lincoln Musical Arts Club and served on the
boards of the Lincoln Woman's Club and of
Lintiquers, a chapter of Questers International.
Jean loved reading and travel. She said her
happiest times were when she was surrounded by her
family.
Her family extends their sincere thanks to the
doctors and staff of ALMH, to Memorial Home Services
Hospice, and to Jean's many friends and neighbors
for their consideration.
Memorials may be made to Lincoln Christian
Church, Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital or Lincoln
Woman's Club.
