Scully Estates in Lincoln for 25 years. He would
often be found with spade in hand, looking through a
surveyor's transit, preserving Scully farms through
proper tiling and drainage.
He was a World War II veteran.
Delmar and his twin brother, Dean, were born two
miles north of Emden on Nov. 9, 1920. His parents
were Ed and Clara Siuts Zumwalt. He married Martha
Allen of Delavan on Aug. 17, 1943.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years; five
children, Gene (and Amy) Zumwalt of Madison, Wis.;
Ann (and Larry) Gerdes of Atlanta, Ga.; Connie
Zumwalt (and Steve Moffitt) of Bloomington, Clark
(and Mary) Zumwalt of Delavan and Jack (and Doreen)
Zumwalt of Marion, Iowa; and 11 grandchildren,
Lindsey and Leslie Gerdes, and Blane, Joel, Mac,
Taylor, Dillon, Jacob, Eve, Tara and Axel Zumwalt.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul,
Robert, Dean and Donald Zumwalt.
He graduated from Delavan High School in 1938 and
from the University of Illinois in 1943. He was a
member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and attended
Reserve Officers' Training. He left for Officer
Candidate School in Fort Sill, Okla., after he was
married. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and
earned his liaison pilot wings at Denton, Texas. He
trained at Camp Van Dorn, Miss., before shipping out
to the European Theater of Operations, where he flew
reconnaissance missions directing artillery fire for
the "Blood and Fire" 63rd Infantry Division. He
finished his overseas duty serving in the Army of
Occupation in Berlin, Germany.
He returned from the war in 1946 and began
farming in Tazewell County. He moved to Logan County
in 1951 and purchased a Scully lease near New
Holland, where he and Martha raised their five
children.
He was a member of the New Holland United
Methodist Church.
