[April 20, 2011]  NEW YORK (AP) -- A 1986 self-portrait by Andy Warhol that was among the last of his paintings to be exhibited while he was alive is going on sale in New York City.

Christie's auction house said Wednesday that it will sell the stark red-on-black "Self-Portrait" on May 11. It's estimated to bring up to $40 million.

The painting is considered a landmark work by the American Pop artist created toward the end of his life.

It was exhibited for the first time in London in 1986, just six months before his death.

Earlier this year, another Warhol self-portrait sold for more than $17 million at Christie's London auction.

The auction record for a Warhol is $71.7 million, for "Green Car Crash."
