An evening of elegance on Elkhart Hill Sept. 11

[August 11, 2011]  ELKHART -- Join the Elkhart Historical Society for an "Enchanted Evening" on Elkhart Hill from 5 to 8 on Sept. 11. Enjoy an evening of casual elegance, classical music, food and wine on the lawn of the beautiful and historic Cro'Hurst Mansion on Elkhart Hill.

The original house, dated 1836, was the home of Jessie Dean Gillett, daughter of the famous John Dean Gillett from Elkhart. She remodeled the home in the Greek Revival style, with elaborate grounds and gardens.

On the south-facing porch under the large white pillars, the evening's musical entertainment will be provided by the Heritage String Quartet, a classical string ensemble of professional musicians. Jean Tweet, violinist for the quartet, played for years with the Illinois Symphony and now manages the Birdsong Books and Vintage Shoppe in historic downtown Elkhart and teaches violin. Completing the ensemble are Kamen Tetkoff, violin; Karen Frost, viola; and Susan Phillips, cello.

A "finger foods" buffet will be served, and wine will be available for purchase. Chairs on the south lawn will provide a view of the home, grounds and setting sun. Luminaries will be lit along the mansion's main drive as the sun sets. A special moment commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is planned.
