Lincoln Daily News
welcomes letters of appreciation, information and
opinion on matters pertaining to the community.
Controversial issues:
As a
community we need to be able to talk openly about
matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get
your point across is to stick to the issue
and refrain from commenting on another person's
opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the
issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

The countdown for the Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival is under way,
and the Lincoln/Logan County Chamber of Commerce staff is facing a
dilemma this year -- they don't have enough volunteers! Every
year, this signature festival for the community brings thousands of
dollars into the economy -- hotels, restaurants, shopping,
sight-seeing and the like. In addition, it provides an economic
opportunity for the festival vendors, artists and balloonists.
Furthermore, the festival has become a vehicle for showcasing the
city of Lincoln and Logan County.
Our tourism bureau is a committed prime festival sponsor, and our
staff and board members who are available for the weekend always
step up to the plate to help. We certainly know how important it is
for our agency and for the local economy. Many other businesses and
organizations have also been great sponsors, and I want to
personally thank them for providing the finances and volunteers that
are critical for the success of the event.
This year, your help as a volunteer is needed more than ever --
particularly with admissions, parking, souvenir tent, tethered rides
and much more. Every person who can help will be much appreciated,
and there is an opportunity for everybody of all walks of life. If
you haven't volunteered before, this will be a great experience for
you. For our young adults, this is also a chance to build your work
resume. Employers take notice of volunteer work. It shows a
dedication to the community and a willingness to serve -- strong
qualities for employment.

So let's keep this festival on the upswing. I have been impressed
in my six years here in the county with how the Art & Balloon
Festival continues to grow and improve. It has done so in large part
with the help of people like you who stepped up to the plate.
I realize that during these difficult economic times many folks
don't have as much free time -- they may be working multiple jobs or
spending all available time looking for a job. They may not be able
to even go on vacation with their family this year. I certainly
understand this, and for those of you in this category, I will
applaud you even more if you can take some time out to volunteer.
The success of the festival translates into the success of our local
economy, and that means more jobs. So take a "stay-cation" this year
and help out with this awesome event!
Please contact the chamber as soon as possible at 735-2385 or
drop in at 1555 Fifth St. or visit
www.lincolnillinois.com
to volunteer.
Thank you, and thanks to every single volunteer who has helped
over the years with the Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival and the
Postville Courthouse 1800s Craft Fair. We'll see you Aug. 26-28!
