Loren 'Doc' Cotton

[December 20, 2011]  ATLANTA -- Loren S. "Doc" Cotton, 80, of Atlanta, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Normal.

A memorial service for Mr. Cotton will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta, with Jeff Kindred officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 341. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the service time on Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery at a later date.

He retired from S and S Construction.

He was in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving on a radar crew on the 38th parallel.

Loren Snowden "Doc" Cotton was born on July 19, 1931, in Eureka. His parents were Snowden and Eula Mae Jones Cotton.

He is survived by his children, Lori Denise Cotton of Bloomington, Loren Stephen Cotton of Atlanta and Elizabeth Mae "Libby" (and Michael) Mederich of Atlanta; two granddaughters, Alexandra Foster and Stephanie Foster; and one brother, Raymond (and Jean) Cotton of Rockaway, Mo.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

He was a member of the Eminence Christian Church and American Legion Post 341 in Atlanta, where he was past commander of the post. He was a former member of the school board for Olympia District 16. He was also a member of the Atlanta Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star.

He was an outdoorsman and a friend to everyone he met.

He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1949.

Doc's family thanks the staff of Heritage Manor Healthcare and Advocate Home Health and Hospice for their wonderful care of him.
