Activities will begin with the presentation of the colors by Logan
County veterans. Girl Scouts of Troop 6053 will lead the Pledge of
Allegiance. Craft guild members will assist in the assembly of
Abraham Lincoln puppets, made from paper bags. Free cake and ice
cream will be served. Lincoln's Logan County Arts and Crafts Guild
has sponsored annual birthday parties for Abraham Lincoln since the
1970s. For many years, the organization's party was the only
observance of the 16th president's birthday in his namesake city.
The craft guild exists to keep alive crafts from the 1800s that
would become extinct if people did not continue to learn how to do
them. Guild members demonstrate their crafts each August at the
1800s Craft Fair at Postville Courthouse State Historic Site and
each September at the Abraham Lincoln National Railsplitting
Festival. Members are also scheduled to do demonstrations this year
at Mount Pulaski's Fourth of July celebration.
The guild is always seeking new members who are interested in
demonstrating crafts of the 1800s. For more information, people can
contact Jean Cypher, guild president, at 217-732-8511.
