Nelson 'Gene' Johnson

[January 03, 2011]  LINCOLN -- Nelson "Gene" Johnson, 86, of Lincoln, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Rich Reinwald officiating.

Burial will be at a later date.

Mr. Johnson was self-employed for 30 years with Johnson Tractor Sales and was a Department of Transportation crew leader for 15 years.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946.

He was born Dec. 14, 1924, in Lincoln. His parents were Nelson O. and Esther Melin Johnson. He married Anita Lenardt on Jan. 23, 1948, in Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife, of Lincoln; two daughters, Cynthia Melin Johnson (and Tim Humes) of Seattle, Wash., and Beth (and Ken) Stewart of Elmwood; one brother, David (and Janet) Johnson of Pekin; and three grandchildren, Daniel Humes, Britta Humes and Anna Stewart.

One sister, Joyce Cole, preceded him in death.

Funeral Director

He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ and an active member of many church organizations. He was a member of AMVETS Post 71, participated with the American Legion Post 263 honor guard for 20 years, was a Lincoln alderman for 16 years and was with meals on wheels for 20 years.

He was very proud of his Swedish ancestry.

Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ or the donor's choice.
