[June 30, 2011] (AP) The unseasonably strong low pressure system of the West will continue eastward toward the Rockies on Thursday with more wet and windy weather.

A cold front associated with this system will kick up scattered showers and chances of thunderstorms in the Rockies and the High Plains. Additional showers and thunderstorms will develop on the eastern side of this system in the western upper Great Lakes. There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms in parts of the northern Plains and the upper Midwest as this system moves eastward. Damaging wind gusts and large hail will be the primary concerns with these storms. Meanwhile, strong winds will also spread across the Four Corners. This may translate into various wind advisories and high wind warnings through the afternoon. Finally, expect cooler temperatures in the High Plains during the next couple of days with the passing of this system.

Daytime highs in the central and southern Plains will remain hot through Friday as the hot air mass lingers over the area. Expect temperatures to climb into the 90s and 100s, while heat indexes in some areas push past the century mark.

Farther east, there will be areas of showers and thunderstorms along the Gulf Coast and in Florida as a cold front drops through the Southeast. Elsewhere, additional showers may develop in the northern Northeast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 35 degrees at Angel Fire, N.M., to a high of 105 degrees at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, Ariz.
