[March 22, 2011]  ATLANTA -- Milton R. Howard, 87, of Atlanta, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at 6:40 a.m. at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta.

His graveside service will follow at 11:20 a.m. Thursday at the Atlanta Cemetery. Tony Billingsley will officiate.

Mr. Howard had been employed at Willow Farms and by Hoblit Seed Co.

He served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was born Aug. 31, 1923, in LeRoy, Kan. His parents were Jay R. and Tillie Nedula Howard. He married Delores J. Kellems on Dec. 2, 1953, and she preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children, Sandra (and Tom) Black of Downs, Sonja (and Dave) Andrew of Ellsworth, Mark (and Beth) Howard of Atlanta, Tim (and Reva) Howard of Downs, Melissa Walters of Champaign, Daniel (and Lisa) Howard of Atlanta, Gary (and Corliss) Howard of Omaha, Neb., Judy (and Robert) McClaran of Birmingham, Iowa, and Jackie Smith of Fairfield, Iowa; one sister, Mae Griffiths of Florida; one brother, Roy Howard of Texas; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Milton, along with Delores, the love of his life, raised a family who dearly loved him. He loved visits from his grandchildren and took great pride in each and every one. He was a man who loved life -- a life filled with huge gardens that he took great pride in. From those gardens he gave the family many meals using his "secret recipes." He enjoyed warm, sunny days outdoors mowing and living the country life to its fullest. He was a great fan of the Chicago Cubs and looked forward to each and every game. He never gave up being the optimist. He battled cancer for 13 years with great determination. His kindheartedness along with his love for his family will be with them always.
