Controversial issues:
As a
community we need to be able to talk openly about
matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get
your point across is to stick to the issue
and refrain from commenting on another person's
opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the
issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

Dear Editor: I write in support of the 1-cent sales tax for school
buildings. I was a school superintendent for 25 years.
During my career, I replaced many school roofs and completed many
life safety projects. Every one of those had to be paid by the local
property owners. In the rural districts in which I worked, the bulk
of the taxes were paid by farm owners. This 1-cent proposal, at
last, provides a way to share the burden with everyone, including
those who visit our town.
Lincoln High School has promised to use its share to reduce its
property tax rate for the next 12 years. Lincoln Elementary will use
its share to replace roofs, doors, windows and boilers in its older
buildings without placing an additional weight on the shoulders of
the local property owners. This tax can only be used for buildings,
building repairs or paying for the bonds for the same.
[to top of second column in this letter] |
It cannot be used for salaries, insurance or any other personnel
costs.
This is a good thing for our schools and our community.
Sincerely,
Bob Kidd
