Bin Laden's death a tough subject for the pulpit

[May 09, 2011]  VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Osama bin Laden was America's face of evil for nearly a decade.

His killing left Christians, Jews and Muslims relieved, proud or even jubilant. For their religious leaders, it was sometimes hard to know just what to say.

There is at least some dissonance between the values they preach and the triumphant response on the streets of New York and Washington to the death of a human being. Even if he was responsible for thousands of killings in those areas and around the world.

Roman Catholic priest Bill Kelly says he understood the pent-up emotional reaction from those traumatized by 9/11. But he said he was taken aback by some celebrations because he detected bloodlust.

He says it's a problem when the reaction is "tinged with hatred and revenge."
