George Gahr

[April 17, 2012]  LINCOLN -- George Gahr, 83, of Lincoln, died Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

George Gahr, 83, of Lincoln, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 19,2012 from 5-7 pm at Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Home in Lincoln. Funeral services will be Friday, April 20, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Lincoln Christian Church with Ron Otto officiating. Burial will follow in New Union Cemetery.

George was born June 6, 1928 in Alton, IL the son of Myron and Ruth (Ewing) Gahr. He married Sue Ann Lemons on October 9, 1954. She preceded him in death on July 22, 2008.

He was a Graduate of Lincoln Christian University in 1955, a lifetime member of Lincoln Christian University Alumni Association, and recipient of the Restoration Award in 1971.

He was the first Executive Director of Christian Homes in Lincoln, Illinois and Retired from Christian Homes in 2001.
He was a member of Grand Lodge of AF & AM Lodge 210 where he served as Chaplain. He was a Master Mason for 50 years.

He was a Director on the Logan County Bank Board and the Lincoln Public Library Board in Lincoln, Illinois. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Lincoln where he served as President in 1982-1983.

George served as the President of the Illinois Nursing Home Association in 1974, and also was inducted into the Senior Adult Hall of Fame by the Christian Benevolent Association in 2003.

Funeral Directors

He loved his work and his family, and was an avid Cardinal Baseball Fan. He will be missed by his friends and family.

He is survived by two daughters, Patti (and Dan) Becker of Lincoln and Rebecca (and Bruce) Davidson of Rainier, Wash.; two sons, George Daniel Gahr and Bruce Andrew Gahr of Lincoln; and four grandchildren, Hilary and Aaron Becker of Lincoln, George Zachary Gahr (and Tara) of Normal and Emily M. Gahr of Indianapolis, Ind.; sister Karolyn (and Jake) Frye of Chandler, AZ., brother William (and Kay) Gahr of Chesterfield, IL, and brother John (and Susan) Gahr of Afton, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sue, and sisters Joanne Scarborough and Gwendolyn Staten.

Memorial donations may be made to The Christian Village, Lincoln Christian Church, Lincoln Christian University, or to Little Galilee Christian Assembly.
