Chili cook-off is hot, hot, hot affair

[August 07, 2012]  By far the hottest event of the fair -- hot chili, hot weather and hot turnout -- running more than 10 years with organizer Doug DeMay at its helm, the chili cook-off was another great success this year.

Saturday it was the hottest day of the fair with a combined temperature and humidity over a 104 heat index. At that, DeMay was particularly pleased with the turnout. This year’s chili cook-off’s eight contestants packed the Knights of Columbus pavilion with those who came to sample their wares and sip cold beer.

The contestants prepared their spiced fare on the grounds beginning at 8 a.m., making several gallons to have enough for judges to try and for "people’s choice" servings.

DeMay commented, "Even though it was a hot day, we had a great crowd, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves."

Winners:

  • First place: Doug Ritterbush, third year in a row, $200

  • Second place: George Lacefield, first time competing, $150

  • Third place: Dave Eyrse, first time competing, $100

  • Fourth place: Jim Byrge, first time competing, $50

  • Best presentation: Kevin and Judy Smith, $25

The event also contributes funds to a local charity, which is decided by the "people's choice" winner. Doug Ritterbush chose Lincoln D.A.R.E. to receive the $203 that was collected.

Sponsors for the event were State Bank of Lincoln, Lincoln IGA, Collision Concepts, Stuart Solutions, Bill's Bar, Investment Center, Webster Construction, Peasley Funeral Home and Characters Pub.
