SPRINGFIELD -- You have an
opportunity to give the young girls in your life a unique gift this
year. While it may not be the traditional item on a child's wish
list, the gift of Girl Scouting will last long after all the
presents have been unwrapped.

This holiday season, Girl Scouts of Central Illinois is launching a
new effort to recruit Girl Scout members and enlist the help of
additional volunteers. Many people think that the only time to sign
up for Girl Scouts is at the beginning of the school year, but the
organization wants everyone to know that it's not too late to join.
Girl Scouting has changed tremendously over the years, turning the
focus from the stereotypical "cookies and crafts" to programming
that concentrates on building courage, confidence and character to
help shape tomorrow's leaders. Girls have the opportunity to work on
STEM projects in science, technology, engineering and math; enjoy
the outdoors through camping programs; experience new cultures
through travel opportunities; and learn leadership skills.
By signing up for Girl Scouts, girls can have all these great
experiences and also participate in the largest financial literacy
program in the world -- the annual Girl Scout cookie program that
kicks off later this winter. The cookie program provides girls with
opportunities to set goals, make decisions, learn about money
management, improve their interpersonal skills and build business
ethics.

Adults are also encouraged to "join" Girl Scouts by becoming a
volunteer -- making a difference in the lives of young girls in just
four hours a month by volunteering with the Girl Scouts.
Volunteering gives adults the opportunity to empower and mentor
young women while sharing their time, interests and skills.
Volunteer opportunities are tailored to fit busy schedules, and the
organization provides all the necessary tools to get started.
Anyone interested in joining Girl Scouts can call 888-623-1237 or
