Meet Vachel's mom at the Lindsay Home this summer

[June 19, 2012]  SPRINGFIELD -- Visitors are invited to meet Vachel Lindsay's mother, Catharine Lindsay, the third Thursday of each month this summer -- June 21, July 19 and Aug. 16 -- at the Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site, 603 S. Fifth St. in Springfield. The events are free and open to the public and are part of this summer's "History Comes Alive" program in Springfield.

Sharon Minor, who portrays Mrs. Lindsay, will be at the home greeting guests from 1 to 4 p.m. those days. At 2:30 p.m. she will invite all guests for tea and cookies in the parlor and share first-person stories of life in the home. Kate Suits will portray the Lindsays' housekeeper and will answer the doorbell, introduce guests to "Mrs. Lindsay," and help with the tea service. These first-person interpretations will create the atmosphere in the Lindsay Home around 1919.

"Guests who don't know Mrs. Lindsay will be there are going to be delighted to see her, and those who are aware can plan their visit to have tea with her," said Jennie Battles, site administrator.

The Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site is the birthplace and longtime residence of poet, author and artist Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, 1879-1931. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free public tours.
