[May 05, 2012]  CHAMPAIGN -- The statewide average temperature for April was 54.1 degrees, almost 1 degree cooler than the record-breaking March temperature of 55.0 degrees, according to Jim Angel, state climatologist, of the Illinois State Water Survey.

Even though April was cooler than March, it was still 2.4 degrees above normal this year. The record-breaking March was 13.8 degrees higher than normal.

It's rare for April to be cooler than March. In fact, since 1895, April was cooler than March only one year -- 1907. Normally April temperatures are 11 degrees warmer than March temperatures.

The highest temperature reported for the state in April was 92 degrees at Kaskaskia on April 2 and at Jacksonville and Pana on April 3. The coldest temperature was 23 degrees at Jerseyville on April 17.

The statewide average precipitation was 3.32 inches, about 0.5 inches below normal. The highest monthly rainfall total reported in Illinois for April was near Belleville, with 8.64 inches. Some of the lowest monthly rainfall totals in the state were in Kankakee and Will counties. For example, Grant Park in Kankakee County received only 0.83 inches for the month.
