"The Illinois History Expo winners represent the state's best
history students and teachers. We applaud their dedication,
ingenuity and excellence," said Catherine Shannon, acting director
of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The agency sponsors
expo in cooperation with the Chicago Metro History Education Center.
Danielle Burgrabe of Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln won an award
from the Illinois organization of the National Society
Daughters of the American Revolution for her project, "Was Illinois
Really a Free State?" The award, which comes with a $50 prize, is
presented for the best project or paper dealing with a small town's
history.
The DAR is composed of members who are descended from
Revolutionary War soldiers. The group supports patriotic and
community service activities, sponsors the DAR Good Citizen Award,
assists with genealogical research, actively volunteers at hospitals
for veterans, and has its
Manual for
Citizenship online.
More than 1,400 junior and senior high school students from
across the state participated in the May 3 expo. The students were
winners selected during regional history fairs earlier this year.
