Research on mice suggests new fertility treatments

Send a link to a friend

[October 05, 2012]  NEW YORK (AP) -- Japanese scientists say they've turned skin cells from mice into eggs, and the eggs produced baby mice. If researchers can adapt that technique to humans, it could lead to an entirely new treatment for infertility in women.

Experts say the approach could someday help women who don't have working eggs of their own, whether because of a medical condition or cancer treatment, or because they are too old.

That means some women could stop worrying about the ticking of their biological clocks.

Still, applying the technique to humans would face a lot of biological hurdles -- and raise a host of ethical questions.
