[August 08, 2013]  KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Officials say a bomb planted in a graveyard in rural eastern Afghanistan has killed 14 members of the same family as they were marking the start of a major Muslim holiday with a visit to the tombs of relatives.

The attack happened in Nangarhar province's Ghany Khel district on Thursday.

Masum Khan Hashimi, the local deputy police chief, says the dead included seven women and seven children. Three other family members were wounded.

It's unclear why the family was targeted. No one claimed responsibility for the attack.

President Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing.

Earlier, Karzai urged the Taliban to lay down their arms, join the political process and stop killing innocent civilians.
