Lincoln- John T. Coombs, 72 of Lincoln passed away at 10:08 P.M. Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. John was born on December 4, 1940 in Lincoln to William and Henrietta Rogers Coombs. He married Carol Gee on October 9, 1964 in Mt. Pulaski.

John graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1960. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964. John was a City of Lincoln Police officer for 25 years. He retired from the force in 1991 as a city detective.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; 2 daughters: Laura (Steven) Charron and Brenda (Bryan) Hatfield, both of Lincoln; 4 sisters: Betty (Robert) Washam of Lincoln, Gloria (Richard) Craig of Beason; Joan Heidbreder of Lincoln, Joyce Bailey of Lincoln; 3 brothers; Gene Coombs of Fullerton, California; George (Dorothy) Coombs of Jacksonville, Florida; and Robert (Maxine) Coombs of Lincoln; 1 sister in law: Jan Gee (Gene) Bowers of Paris, Tennessee; 1 brother in law; David (Susie) Gee of Mt. Pulaski; 3 step-grandsons and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Shirley and Frances; and his brother Earl.

John enjoyed spending time with family, refinishing furniture, going to auctions and his daily drive with Carol through the state parks in Lincoln looking for deer.

He was "a regular" at Mel-O-Cream and was active in the Lincoln High School Class of 1960 Committee. He was well known for his exploits as the "Witchdoctor" at class functions. John was a caring man with a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Services for John will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, March 8 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln with Rev. Robert Henderson conducting services. A visitation will be held from 4-7:00 P.M. on Thursday March 7 at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Lincoln Police Benevolent Fund.
