[December 16, 2014]  Dec 15 (The Sports Xchange) - The Edmonton Oilers, who have one win in their past 16 games, fired head coach Dallas Eakins on Monday.

Todd Nelson, coach of the Oilers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons, will join the team in time for Edmonton's next game on Tuesday at the Arizona Coyotes.

General manager Craig MacTavish made the announcement and said he will coach the team temporarily while Nelson transitions into the role of interim coach for the remainder of the season.

The Minnesota Wild placed defenseman Keith Ballard and forward Ryan Carter on injured reserve.

They both have upper body injuries.

The Carolina Hurricanes placed forward Andrej Nestrasil on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

Nestrasil has one goal and four assists in 21 games played this season.

The Anaheim Ducks reassigned goaltender Jason LaBarbera and forward Chris Wagner to the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League.

LaBarbera, 34, posted a 2-0-1 record with a 2.61 goals-against average and .909 save percentage in five games with the Ducks this season.

Longtime NHL goalie Tomas Vokoun, who led the Nashville Predators to their first-ever playoff appearance in 2003-04, has reportedly decided to retire.

"I think I can be proud of the career I had," he told the Czech daily Sport.

Vokoun played 700 games in 15 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, Predators, Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. He went 300-288-35-57 with a 2.55 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and 51 shutouts. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
