RMA reminds farmers to file insurance claims after recent flooding
Claims must be filed within 72 hours of discovering damage
 

[July 16, 2014]  SPRINGFIELD, Ill., July 15, 2014 — The USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) reminds producers in areas where heavy rainfall and flood conditions have caused crop damage to contact their crop insurance company.

Producers who are affected by flooding must notify their agent within 72 hours of discovering damage. Before a producer takes any action on the damaged crop or flooded acreage, they must receive approval, in writing, from their insurance company.

There may be several options available for producers. “Crop insurance is critical to many farm operations in our region,” said RMA’s Springfield Regional Office Director Brian Frieden. RMA’s Springfield Region includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. “We encourage producers affected by the flooding to contact their crop insurance agent to report damage and discuss all possible options.”

Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. Contact a local crop insurance agent for more information about the program. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers or on the RMA website at: www.rma.usda.gov/tools/agents/
