[June 24, 2014]  June 23 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Monday's Major League Baseball games.

Blue Jays 9, Yankees 3

Adam Lind homered and drove in four runs, and right-hander Marcus Stroman pitched eight strong innings in his longest major league outing as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 8-3.

Stroman (4-2) allowed three hits, including a home run by Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, one walk and one run while equaling his season best with seven strikeouts.

Lind, the Blue Jays' designated hitter, had an RBI single and a three-run homer. Until Monday, he was limited to three appearances as a pinch hitter, going 2-for-3.

Catcher Dioner Navarro was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Blue Jays (43-35), who handed the Yankees (39-36) their third straight loss and extended their American League East lead over New York to 2 1/2 games.

Orioles 6, White Sox 4

Chris Davis belted a three-run pinch-hit homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Baltimore Orioles a 6-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth before Davis blasted a 3-2 pitch into the seats in right field to give the Orioles a dramatic victory.

The Orioles (40-35) have won three straight games, while Chicago (35-42) has dropped five in a row.

Pirates 8, Rays 1

Starling Marte and reigning National League MVP Andrew McCutchen combined to score four runs, knock in two more and tied a season-high by stealing three bases in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 8-1 rout of the Tampa Bay Rays.

The hard-hitting sprinters were central in Pittsburgh's first two scoring innings, which effectively settled the game by the third as Pittsburgh evened its record at 38-38 as the Rays (31-47) remained baseball's worst team.

Edinson Volquez (5-6) allowed a run on five hits in eight innings.

Marlins 4, Phillies 0

Nathan Eovaldi and four relievers combined on a six-hitter, and the Miami Marlins blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0.

Third baseman Casey McGehee doubled home two runs in the first for Miami, which won for just the second time in six games.

Pinch hitter Reed Johnson and second baseman Derek Dietrich contributed RBI singles in a two-run ninth. Philadelphia dropped its third straight.

Royals 5, Dodgers 3

Jeremy Guthrie pitched superbly into the eighth inning, catcher Salvador Perez homered and doubled, and the Kansas City Royals snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3.

Royals center fielder Jarrod Dyson finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases.

Guthrie, who won his third consecutive start, was pulled with two outs in the eighth after designated hitter Hanley Ramirez's double scored third baseman Miguel Rojas and pinch hitter Justin Turner, both whom singled earlier in the inning.

Guthrie (5-6) was charged with two runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out five.

Nationals 3, Brewers 0

Left-hander Gio Gonzalez threw six shutout innings and first baseman Adam LaRoche hit his ninth home run of the season to lead the Washington Nationals to a 3-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Brewers were held to three hits and four walks and struck out five times against Gonzalez, who earned his first victory since April 18.

Washington won its third game in a row on LaRoche's third inning blast and moved 2 1/2 games ahead of idle Atlanta for first place in the National League East.

Cardinals 8, Rockies 0

St Louis Cardinals' right-hander Lance Lynn held the Colorado Rockies to three singles in eight innings as the Cardinals romped home 8-0.

Matt Adams backed Lynn with two homers and drove in a career-high six runs, while the starter issued no walks and struck out seven.

Lynn (8-5) gave up a one-out single in the first to Corey Dickerson and then retired 16 straight batters until Charlie Blackmon singled with two out in the sixth.

Reds 6, Cubs 1

Billy Hamilton drove in Chris Heisey with a go-ahead single in the ninth inning before a Devin Mesoraco grand slam sealed the Cincinnati Reds 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Hamilton, who went 2-for-5 and scored two run, skipped a base hit up the middle to drive in Heisey from second with what proved to be the winning run off Cubs reliever Hector Rondon (1-2).

Rondon then loaded the bases for Mesoraco, and the Reds catcher launched a 1-0 pitch into the left field basket for his second grand slam of the season.

Mesoraco homered for a fourth consecutive game.

Marlins 12, Red Sox 3

First baseman Logan Morrison hit two home runs and drove in four runs during a 4-for-4 night to help starting pitcher Felix Hernandez earn his first win in four starts by way of a 12-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Hernandez (9-2) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings of work to earn his first win since June 2.

Seattle had five of its 14 hits during a six-run fourth inning that blew the game open and chased Boston starter John Lackey (8-5) from the game.

Padres 6, Giants 0

Cuban native Odrisamer Despaigne tossed seven scoreless innings in his major league debut, and first baseman Tommy Medica's two-run double provided the big blow the San Diego Padres needed in a 6-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Despaigne required only 86 pitches to negotiate the seven innings. He surrendered four hits and no walks, and he struck out one.

He retired the first 10 hitters he faced, not allowing a runner until Giants right fielder Hunter Pence dumped a double into right-center with one out in the fourth inning.
