[May 09, 2014]  May 8 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Thursday's Major League Baseball games.

Astros 6, Tigers 2

Dallas Keuchel pitched 7 2/3 strong innings and Jose Altuve doubled in the go-ahead runs as the Houston Astros halted a five-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the in-form Detroit Tigers.

The left-handed Keuchel (3-2) struck out seven and scattered six hits for Houston, while rookie right fielder George Springer hit his first major league home run, a solo shot in the fifth, to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

Drew Smyly, Keuchel's college roommate at the University of Arkansas, gave up three fifth-inning runs after cruising through the first four and was charged with the loss for the Tigers, who entered the contest on an eight-game winning streak.

Indians 9, Twins 4

Asdrubal Cabrera had four hits, including a home run and three RBIs, and Michael Brantley had three hits, a home run and three RBIs as the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins.

Blue Jays 12, Phillies 6

The Toronto Blue Jays clubbed five homers, and 39-year-old knuckleballer R.A. Dickey turned in his fourth consecutive quality start in a blowout of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Blue Jays swept the four-game series against the Phillies and earned a season-best fifth consecutive win, their longest streak since winning 11 straight in June of last year.

Orioles 3, Rays 1

The Baltimore Orioles beat Tampa Bay, completing their first road sweep of the Rays in more than three years.

Baltimore (18-14) scored three early runs off Tampa Bay starter David Price (3-3) and wriggled out of a few jams, eventually escaping with the club's first three-game series sweep against any team since last July.

Rangers 5, Rockies 0

The Texas Rangers kept the lid on Colorado's red-hot bats to beat the Rockies in a shutout in a rain-soaked home game.

Starter Matt Harrison and four relievers helped the Rangers end a three-game losing streak - all at the hands of Colorado - as Harrison won his first game of the season after two no-decisions.

After out-scoring Texas 29-5 over the previous three games this week, Colorado managed only five hits in losing for just the third time in the last 12 games.

Cubs 12, White Sox 5

Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning while Mike Olt added a grand slam in the eighth as the Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox in a city series finale.

The result halted this week's three-game White Sox interleague winning streak over the Cubs.

Mariners 1, Royals 0

Japan's Hisashi Iwakuma made a memorable home season debut for the Seattle Mariners as the right-hander threw eight scoreless innings to beat the Kansas City Royals.

The Mariners won despite collecting just two hits. Both came in the third inning, when Seattle scored the game's only run.

Iwakuma (2-0) allowed just four hits without issuing a walk, and he struck out seven. It was only his second start of the season after he missed spring training and all of April with a finger injury.

Marlins 3, Padres 1 (11 innings)

Giancarlo Stanton lined a two-run homer after a two-out error extended the 11th inning, and the Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres.

Padres second baseman Jedd Gyorko bobbled a grounder by Marlins second baseman David Dietrich with two outs and no one on for an error that allowed major league RBI leader Stanton to come to the plate.

The Marlins right fielder lined the third pitch he faced a hefty 412 feet, clearing the fence in right-center.

Giants 3, Dodgers 1 (10 innings)

Two runs in the 10th inning lifted the San Francisco Giants to victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

An RBI single by first baseman Brandon Belt scored Hunter Pence for the game's final run as the Giants (22-13) won for the first time in three games and handed the Dodgers (19-17) their fourth defeat in five. (Editing by John O'Brien)
