Last school year's fifth grade class from Northwestern school got a surprise on Thursday. Mary Ellen Martin and Wanda Lee Rohlfs of the Abraham Lincoln Statue Committee paid the kids a visit and presented them with a special gift. Last school year, the students, who are now in junior high, conducted a penny drive to raise money for a new statue. In appreciation, the committee presented the kids with a print of the "Lincoln Rallies the People" speech that took place in the city of Lincoln on October 16th, 1858. The print will go back to the Northwest School and will hang in the library for all to enjoy. The committee has reached their goal, and the statue will be created later this year. The Abraham Lincoln statue will go on the lawn of the Logan County Courthouse in Lincoln. Photo by Nila Smith (Click on image for larger version.) |
