[October 29, 2014]  DECATUR - Big Blue Volleyball Rolls On - The #18th ranked Millikin University volleyball team scored five victories last week including sweeping all of its matches in its own Linda Slagell Dig for the Cure Classic played on October 24-25. Millikin is now 27-5 on the season.

On Saturday, the Big Blue defeated Wisconsin-Platteville 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22). Jade Becker (Mt. Zion, H.S.) had 18 kills for Millikin followed by Audrey Krajec (West Salem, Edwards County H.S.) with 14. Krajec had four service aces. Jenna Hilgers (Mason City, Illini Central H.S.) led Millikin with 30 assists.

Millikin defeated Simpson College 3-0 (25-19, 25-18 and 25-22). Krajec had 16 kills followed by Alora Goodey (Lincoln, H.S.) with 12. Hilgers had 29 set assists.

In Friday’s action, Millikin defeated Wheaton College 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-15) in a game that also counted in the CCIW standings. Krajec led Millikin with 14 kills and 10 digs. Goodey had 11 digs. Erin Syversen (Pewaukee, Wis., Waukesha West H.S.) had a team high 12 digs. Hilgers had 24 assists and Alicia Thompson (Decatur, MacArthur H.S.) had 23.

In the second match of the night, Millikin defeated the University of Dubuque 3-1 (25-18, 25-11, 21-25, 25-14). Millikin celebrated senior night during the game and the Big Blue’s three seniors came up big. Krajec had 18 kills and 11 digs. Sara Travis (Schaumburg, H.S.) had 12 kills and Becker has 10. Krajec and Becker each had three blocks. Syversen again led Millikin in digs with 14. Hilgers had 24 assists and Thompson added 20.

Millikin’s Krajec, Becker and Goodey were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Millikin earned a conference road victory 3-1 at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on October 21.

The Cardinals won the first set 26-24 before the Big Blue rallied to win the second and third sets 25-12 and 25-17. North Central jumped out to a 17-13 advantage, but Millikin battled back to win the set and the match 25-23.

Krajec led Millikin with 18 kills. She had 11 digs and one block. Becker had 12 kills and three blocks. Travis had 11 kills and two blocks. Geena Mancuso (Naperville, Waubonsie Valley H.S.) had a team high 15 digs while Christina Capuani (Addison, Addison Trail H.S.) added 14. Alicia Thompson had 26 assists and Jenna Hilgers had 19 assists and three service aces.

Millikin will play at Illinois Wesleyan on October 29.

Big Blue Men's Soccer Scores Two Conference Wins

The Millikin men's soccer team won its second straight conference game scoring a 1-0 victory at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin on October 25.

Millikin scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute when Ben Spelman (Sligo, Ireland) found the net off an assist from Nick Abel (Schaumburg, H.S.).

Millikin junior Daniel Sinclair (Peoria, Richwoods H.S.) was outstanding in goal as Carthage out shot Millikin 20-7. Sinclair had five saves including one with just 14 seconds remaining on a shot by Carthage's Ryan Crane.
 


Millikin defeated Illinois Wesleyan University 2-1 on October 22 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois.

Illinois Wesleyan got on the board first at the 5:30 mark on a goal from John Pisani.

The Big Blue answered back in the 20th minute on a goal by Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, H.S.) off an assist from Abel.

Millikin’s Kellin Daniel (Waterloo, H.S.) would score the game winner in the 68th minute with the assist again going to Abel.

Sinclair had five saves in goal for Millikin.

Millikin is now 7-7-1, 2-3 and will travel to North Central College on October 29 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Millikin Swimming Opens Season in Record Fashion

The Millikin men’s and women’s swimming team opened its season in a tri-match at Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, Indiana on October 24. The Engineers defeated Millikin in both the men’s and women’s competition and the Big Blue also lost to Lindenwood-Belleville.

Big Blue freshman Sami Battle (Odell, Pontiac H.S.) won the 50 Yard Freestyle in 25.09 setting a new school record in the event. Battle also won the 100 Yard Freestyle in 55.19, which was Millikin fourth fastest time in school history.

Millikin freshman Felicity Speirs (Lake Stevens, Washington, H.S.) won the 1000 Yard Freestyle in 11:42.85, which is the 10th quickest time in Millikin school history.

Millikin junior Shelby Kobs (Byron, H.S.) won the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:10.42 and the 200 Yard IM in 2:23.20.

The Millikin women won the 400 Freestyle Relay in 3:58.01 with Kobs, Sabrina Cipolla (Libertyville, H.S.), Speirs and Battle swimming legs.

Millikin finished in third place at the Illinois Wesleyan Halloween Meet on October 25 in Bloomington, Illinois.

Millikin's top individual performances were Speirs with a third place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle in 5:47.24 and Andrew Griffin (Tinley Park, H.S.) in the Men's 500 Free with a third place time of 5:36.02.

Millikin will host Illinois College on October 31 at 6 p.m. in McIntosh Pool.

Millikin Football Drops Road Contest

The Millikin football team lost a 26-7 contest at North Park University in Chicago on October 25.

Millikin’s Nick Pippin (Bourbonnais, Bradley Bourbonnais H.S.) was 21-47-1 for 170 yards and one touchdown a 32 yard pass to Brady Cufaude (Pekin, H.S.). Cufaude led the Millikin receivers with eight catches for 77 yards.

Jake Gates (Mattoon, H.S.) led the Millikin defense with 12 tackles.

Millikin is now 2-5, 0-4 and will host Carthage College on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.
