Pirates 3, Braves 2
Gerrit Cole overcame some early troubles to retire 17 successive
batters as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 and
clinched a spot in the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
Cole (11-5), who gave up a run in each of the first two innings,
pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two
walks, striking out eight.
The victory, combined with Cincinnati's win over Milwaukee, clinched
a wild-card spot for the Pirates (86-71) who also remain in
contention for the National League Central title.
The Pirates' Andrew McCutchen scored the winning run on a double by
left fielder Starling Marte.

Reds 3, Brewers 1
Devin Mesoraco and Todd Frazier homered in support of Johnny Cueto,
who pitched eight strong innings to lift the Cincinnati Reds to a
3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Center fielder Carlos Gomez homered for Milwaukee.
Cueto (19-9) allowed one run on four hits, with one walk and seven
strikeouts.

Blue Jays 10, Mariners 2
Edwin Encarnacion homered and drove in four runs while Dalton Pompey
hit his first major league homer as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated
the Seattle Mariners 10-2.
Blue Jays' left fielder Pompey homered against Hernandez to tie the
game and start a seven-run fifth inning.

Royals 7, Indians 1
Yordano Ventura pitched seven scoreless innings and Kansas City
collected six doubles from six different hitters as the Royals
rolled over the Cleveland Indians 7-1.
The right-handed Ventura (14-10) held Cleveland to four hits,
striking out six and walking four.
The loss nearly eliminates the Indians from the wild-card race. They
are 4-1/2 games behind the Royals, who are in the second wild-card
spot.

Nationals 4, Mets 2
Adam LaRoche hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning,
and Tanner Roark, bidding for a spot in the postseason rotation, won
his third consecutive start as the National League East champion
Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 4-2.

Tigers 4, White Sox 3
Miguel Cabrera hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth
after the Tigers squandered a three-run lead in the top of the
inning to ensure Detroit remained atop the American League Central
with a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Tigers starter David Price pitched eight scoreless innings and
struck out eight before giving up three ninth-inning runs on five
hits.
Detroit (87-70) held onto their one-game lead over Kansas City in
the division.

Orioles 5, Yankees 4
Nelson Cruz hit his 40th home run of the season as the Baltimore
Orioles pushed the New York Yankees closer to elimination from the
postseason with a 5-4 victory.
Cruz reached 40 home runs when he opened the fifth inning with a
drive that landed in the first row of the left-field seats.
Second baseman Kelly Johnson and right fielder Nick Markakis also
homered for Baltimore, who are two games behind the Los Angeles
Angels for the American League's best record.

Marlins 2, Phillies 0
Henderson Alvarez pitched 7-2/3 innings as the Miami Marlins
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0.
Alvarez (12-6) allowed just five hits and one walk and lowered his
ERA to 2.70.

Rays 6, Red Sox 2
Ben Zobrist's two-run double triggered a five-run eighth inning
while Alex Cobb pitched seven strong innings and the Tampa Bay Rays
beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2.
Designated hitter David DeJesus had two singles and drove in a run,
first baseman James Loney added a two-run single and left fielder
Matt Joyce a solo homer for the Rays.

Dodgers 4, Giants 2
Second baseman Justin Turner homered twice, and the Los Angeles
Dodgers crept closer to winning their second straight National
League West title with a 4-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
Right fielder Matt Kemp also delivered a home run for the Dodgers
(90-68), who can clinch the division crown with a win Wednesday over
the Giants (85-72).
San Francisco fell a game back of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the top
spot in the wild-card race but maintained a five-game lead over
Milwaukee for the second wild-card spot.
Dodgers starter Zack Greinke, unbeaten in his last seven starts, had
a solid outing, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts
and no walks in eight innings.

Angels 2, A's 0
Sonny Gray struck out a career-high 12 batters but the Oakland A's
lost 2-0 to the Los Angeles Angels and fell into a tie with the
Kansas City Royals in the American League wild-card playoff race.
The A's (86-71) and Royals (86-71) are three games ahead of the
slumping Seattle Mariners (83-74) with five games remaining.
The Angels (97-61), who clinched the West crown last week, remain 2
1/2 games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles (94-63) in a battle to
finish with the best record and secure home-field advantage
throughout the playoffs.
Third baseman Gordon Beckham hit his ninth home run of the season.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 3 (10 innings)
Catcher Welington Castillo delivered an RBI single in the bottom of
the 10th inning as the Chicago Cubs played spoiler with a 4-3
victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Castillo's walk-off hit scored Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who
had reached with a one-out double off the center-field wall.
The loss cost the Cardinals (88-70) some cushion in their bid for a
National League Central title.
Second-place Pittsburgh moved to within 1 1/2 games of first-place
St. Louis with a 3-2 victory over Atlanta.

Twins 6, Diamondbacks 3
Right-hander Kyle Gibson allowed one run over seven innings,
scattering seven hits as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Arizona
Diamondbacks 6-3.
Gibson (13-11) retired the first eight batters he faced and walked
none.

Rangers 2, Astros 1
Rookie right-hander Nick Martinez continued his recent upturn, and
the Texas Rangers kept up their torrid pace in a 2-1 victory over
the Houston Astros.
Texas (64-93) won for the 10th time in 11 games as Martinez (5-11)
limited the Astros to five hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings, striking
out five without issuing a walk.
