Joey Logano is enjoying the best season of his career and it has paid off handsomely, as he signed a contract extension with Team Penske on Thursday.

Team Penske announced the multiyear deal for the Chase for the Sprint Cup contender, who will continue to drive the No. 22 Ford in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and No. 22 in the Nationwide Series. Logano, a seven-year NASCAR veteran who joined Team Penske at the start of the 2013 season, has Sprint Cup wins this year at Texas Motor Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, Bristol Motor Speedway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Team owner Roger Penske said Logano, 24, has been "everything we hoped he would be, both as a driver and as a representative of our organization."

Philadelphia's Claude Giroux, who had been out a week because of a lower body injury, returned to practice on Thursday and said he would ready for the Flyers' regular-season opener against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 8.

Giroux, who originally was expected to be out for two weeks, practiced with his teammates but was not expected to play in the preseason game Thursday night against the New Jersey Devils.

The Flyers believe he will be able to play in the last two preseason games, Tuesday against the New York Rangers and Oct. 2 against the Washington Capitals, in order to be at full speed for the opener.

---The Columbus Blue Jackets still aren't sure when -- or if -- Nathan Horton will be on the ice this season.

The oft-injured center is dealing with a degenerative back condition that the club is trying to remedy with core strengthening, general manager Jarmo Kekelainen said Thursday. The Blue Jackets open the regular season on Oct. 9 against the Buffalo Sabres.

The 29-year-old Horton was limitied to 35 games last season after signing a seven-year, $37.1 million contract with the team in 2013. He missed the early part of the season recovering from shoulder surgery and then suffered an abdominal injury that required surgery. He did not see any action in Columbus' first-round playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
