Lincoln Daily News
welcomes letters of appreciation, information and
opinion on matters pertaining to the community.
Controversial issues:
As a
community we need to be able to talk openly about
matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get
your point across is to stick to the issue
and refrain from commenting on another person's
opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the
issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

To the editor: As the chair of the Logan County Democrats, I want
to remind your readers that there are indeed two candidates in the
campaigns for Congress in the 18th District.
Darin LaHood has received so much press coverage, simply because he
is the son of the honorable Ray LaHood. No article failed to mention
that. I am most proud that Ray LaHood served in the Obama
administration and demonstrated good relations with both parties.
Darin LaHood is not like his father.
Rob Mellon is the other candidate, but has not received nearly as
much coverage, but Mellon won the Democratic primary. This gentleman
is an AP High School Teacher in Quincy, an Army Captain who trains
sergeants for service, husband and father.
Mr. Mellon believes the issues must address income inequality
between the middle class and the 1% at the top, the millionaires and
billionaires. He believes that the overwhelming response of
Illinoisians (Over 60%) to the referendum question that those at the
top should pay their fair share is your voice. He agrees with you.
He will work to restore honesty and integrity to the 18th District
after the seat was vacated by Aaron Schock for misappropriation of
campaign contributions. He has a moral compass that guides his life
and work. He will always ask himself, "Is this right to do, is this
fair, is this moral?"
[to top of second column in this letter] |
As a teacher himself, he will fight for full funding for our
children's schools and fully support our teachers. Education is the
ladder for the middle class to rise to the best of their abilities.
As a veteran himself, and still active Army Reservist, Mellon will
protect the rights and privileges of Veterans and their families.
Once discharged from the military, a vet should not be subjected to
living in poverty. Education and health benefits must be protected.
But, defense spending should be monitored so that extravagance
doesn't escalate the military budget out of reason on unnecessary
military equipment.
Rob Mellon is a real person, husband and father; not a polished,
well-groomed professional politician. He will give you straight
answers. He will not need to cling to his father's image and
reputation to make you believe in him. He is your true candidate for
the 18th District Congressional seat. Remember to vote September
10th in the Special Election to replace Aaron Schock.
