How
old were you when you began drinking? How old were
you when you first smoked marijuana? According to a
Logan County survey taken in 2012, seven percent of
all eighth graders that year admitted they drank at
age 13 and nine percent admitted they smoked pot at
age 13. That same year, only 1 percent of
12th-graders admitted to drinking and only five
percent admitted to smoking pot. Why the drop?
Because kids who start doing drugs at age 13 are
more likely to drop out of school before reaching
the 12th grade than those who do not drink and do
drugs. For many children experimenting with drugs
and alcohol is truly the beginning of the end of
their lives, as these are the same children who
spend time in prison, lose hope for a bright future,
and die of drug overdoses. Today LDN will feature
part one of a two-part series on a group in Logan
County that is preparing to wage war on drug
addiction in general, and heroin use specifically,
for the sake of our children.

The Route
66 ‘The Road Ahead Initiative’ is looking
for a new name, and you may be the one who
comes up with the perfect one. Bill Thomas
of Atlanta, is the chairman of the
Initiative, and would like to see Logan
County residents get involved in a contest
to rename the Initiative as well as give it
a new logo. The Initiative is "a group of
Route 66 stakeholders, facilitated by the
World Monuments Fund and the National Park
Service." The goal is to revitalize and
sustain the iconic Mother Road across the
country. Learn more about the Initiative and
how you can enter the name and logo contest
in the Tourism section in Health and
Leisure.
