Lincoln Daily News welcomes letters of appreciation, information and opinion on matters pertaining to the community.

Controversial issues:
As a community we need to be able to talk openly about matters that affect the quality of our lives. The most effective and least offensive manner to get your point across is to stick to the issue and refrain from commenting on another person's opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

What can be done to prevent mass acts of violence

To the editor:

In light of the mass shooting in California, we easily say "they are in our thoughts and prayers." True, they are, the victims, families, and first responders. But, many times God is answering our prayers by demanding that we act. The Book of James in the New Testament speaks of putting faith into action. We must demand change. These mass murders should never become "normal" to us.

Why these incidents of mass murder happen is only one of the questions. We think perhaps there are "copy cat" events. They get 24/7 coverage. Then, some people blame the breakdown of the American two-parent family. Some blame the lack of prayer in school. Others think it's desensitization to action without consequences from violent movies or video games our children play every day.

But, the common denominator seems to be easy access to guns. The types of guns used many times are kinds that are manufactured solely to kill with many bullets fired within seconds. These are not deer hunting rifles. We need strict legislation that will not allow those people on the no-fly lists to have access to weapons. We need strict legislation that prohibits the mentally ill from access to guns, such as the young man involved at Sandy Hook School. We need legislation that will allow the CDC the right to study gun violence.

We need to support those candidates that offer a clear policy on ending gun violence. Watch and read every thing you can about candidates to see where they stand. Don't vote for anyone who votes against your own values and interests.

Thank you,
Rebecca Drake
