Heartland Community College is part of the College
Now program. This program offers free tuition to those who pass the
competency test that allows them entrance into the class. Students
are earning three free hours of college credit, which could save
each a few thousand dollars.
Lincoln College gives the dual-credit students a discounted rate.
Each of these classes is four credit hours, so students are earning
another eight hours at a discounted rate. Most importantly, if a
student who takes these courses is not entering a program where
multiple math classes are needed, then he or she is completely done
with math courses when entering college.
Here are what some students say about the courses:
Justin Woods, a student that has been enrolled in all three classes
states, “I feel much more confident about taking any more math
classes in college now that I have taken part in such programs.
Whether my dual-credit transfers to the college I plan on attending
or not, I am better prepared for anything they can throw at me
because the dual-credit experience offers the personability of a
high school teacher who truly cares about the furthering of my
education, more class time to grasp difficult concepts, and a
familiar environment I am comfortable in. The dual-credit programs
require hard work to be put forth, but the incentives of taking them
far outweigh the difficulty of the coursework. I can gladly say that
I believe my time in taking them has been well spent.”

Carrie Benjamin, a student that has been enrolled in all three
classes states, “I feel better about my decision on taking
dual-credit math in high school instead of waiting until college to
take the classes because I was able to feel more comfortable about
going to the teacher and asking questions about the homework. I knew
that this was my best decision for being able to understand the
material that was being taught. I know that I might not need to use
these credit hours when I go to college because of the major that I
am interested in, but I will feel better about having the credits in
case I do need them later on. These classes have been hard and
stressful, but I know that taking the classes was worth all of the
time and stress that was put into my grade.”
Lexi Taylor, a student that has been enrolled in
all three classes states, “I love having the opportunity to take
these classes in high school. I already know Mr. Hammer from taking
pre-calculus, and it’s awesome to be able to take classes from
someone I am already familiar with and who I know I learn well from.
I feel like it is easier to get closer with teachers in high school,
and it is much easier to ask questions.

"I also like having plenty of time to work
compared to the shorter amount of time I would have in class in
college. Taking calculus 1 & 2 and statistics will allow me to not
have to take math in college. I am going into a pre-med major, so I
will have plenty of difficult classes already. It is nice to get
these credits early and be able to have more space in my college
schedule for extra classes like band and Spanish.”
Josh Vinson, who is also taking all three of the dual-credit classes
says, “This has been the best school-year of my entire life. Through
the help of my professor, Mr. Hammer, it has been possible to
accomplish the unthinkable and grasp an impeccable understanding of
the subject at hand, whether it be calculus, or statistics. He has
not only been an outstanding teacher of the subjects, he has been a
great mentor and an overall great friend. He is the perfect person
for the job, and has created opportunities for me in my following
years through college. I feel as if I am prepared to take on all
college math courses with the same mindset that Mr. Hammer instilled
into me.”
