[January 03, 2024]  Sticking to an annual tradition at Lincoln Daily News, staff have been asked to select their ten favorite photos of the year.  This year, the photos are divided into four groupings with January, February and March's top pictures of the year being selected by Karen Castelein.

Karen struggled a bit with coming up with ONLY ten favorites across the three-month period. but that is okay.  As you peruse the photos you will find that there are entire slideshows with links provided along with pictures from the top picture spots in the paper and also pictures found within some of our important stories of the year.

We hope you enjoy today's selection, and look forward to bringing you the next set of top pics on Wednesday.

Incredible night shots by Nila Smith of breaking news that touched the heart of our community. Amazing story of the survival of the two people involved.

This day in sports was a beautiful collection of one of the most talented photographers we have been privileged to work with, Cindy Bivin. LCHS boys defeated Danville at regionals. The slide shows are a beautiful progress of just how the game was played and reactions by players, coaches, cheerleaders, and fans. So much so that you felt you had seen the game in person if you hadn't been there.

Little Eyes

What this photo, by Stacy Sparks, captures is amazing and the poem below it is priceless. And while this is aimed at the lady railers it is also a call to action of each of us. Little eyes are like sponges but sometimes the eyes are not so little but are looking to you for example and guidance. Be the best you, you can be!

This photo caught my eye because in th middle of a flurry of motion it focuses on the two coaches looking up at the score and the time clock. No one else sees what they see at that moment. Very cool shot by Lynn Paulus.

While animals and kids draw you in automatically this shot catches this cat in the act of steeling an egg. Two seconds sooner or later you would not have seen what happened. Good shot of Hercules by pet parent Heather Martin.

This cute little guy is determined to snatch his breakfast now! And again, Nila Smith caught him at just the right moment. What also strikes me again is the fact that there are so many fundraisers going on in our county and they are all generously supported. It doesn't matter if it is FFA, sports, habitat, rotary, kiwanis, churches or schools, etc. our community shows up!

This photo, by Teena Lowery, is of a congratulations lineup after a game. No defeat and no showing off. Just mutual acknowledgement of a game well played ending in a respectful handshake. This lesson transfers to life. In the end we need to be respectful of others.

Again our community rises to the occasion of supporting each. It touches my heart that it is not just adults pitching in but young adults. I love how we teach the next generation to care about people and establish deep connections in our community.

We love our community! Locating our office downtown has been so rewarding. And the way the community has embraced us has been nothing short of amazing. We have grown so much because of you. Please keep sending your photos and story ideas. Together we are documenting OUR history. We love you.
