A small cat-loving crowd gathered at the Lincoln Stage
Saturday morning to support seven 4-H members as
they presented their cats to a judge:
Roux Starr and Kiss, Logan County
Ruthie Ruhl and Shadow, Logan County
Katie Lynn and Bullseye, Logan County
Charlotte Toohill and Bell, Logan County
Sarah Starasta and Jewel, Logan County
J.R. Lynn and Scooby, Logan County
Ella Haage, Sangamon County
These young people turned in 4-H Cat Project Record
Books ahead of time so the judge would have the
opportunity to look over the projects before meeting
the felines. The books included veterinary records, pet
owner care, 4-H activities,
and a story about their experience.
A few 4-H’ers shared part of their pet story before the
judging began:

differently for her coat because she is a long hair cat,
prone to getting matted fur. Kiss will be 2 years old in
August.
Ruthie’s cat, Shadow, is an outside cat, making care a
little different than indoor cats. Ruthie said her cat only
goes to the vet when it’s time for a shot. Any other care
for Shadow is left up to Ruthie.
Sarah shared that Jewel is one of three cats in the
family, along with a dog and a bearded dragon. While
the cats are family pets, Sarah is mostly responsible for
Jewel’s care.
The judge, Jessica Haberkorn, has been in the
veterinary profession for over 10 years. She graded
each young person on the care of their pet, talking to
each one and asking questions regarding what they had
learned throughout the year. Jessica was looking for
perfection in each cat examining
their eyes, teeth, ears, body, coat, gums, bone structure
and temperament.
At the end of the judging, each young person received
a blue ribbon. Jessica told the crowd that pet care is a
huge responsibility and she was proud of these young
people.
