George Hawkins

George D. Hawkins, 71, of McLean died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2001, at his residence.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, at the McLean Christian Church, with Tony Billingsley officiating.

A private, family committal service will follow at McLean Cemetery, with military rites by Atlanta American Legion Post 341.

Friends may call at the McLean Christian Church from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday.

Quiram Funeral Home in Atlanta is in charge of arrangements.

Hawkins retired from Cutler-Hammer/Eaton Corporation in Lincoln in 1992. He also owned and operated Hawkins Heating and Cooling with his son, Jeff.

He was an Army veteran of Korea. He was the first resident of this area to be drafted for the Korean War.

He was born June 9, 1930, at Waynesville, to Horace and Ruth Pray Hawkins. He married Alta "Toni" Barr on Dec. 19, 1952, at McLean. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Gary (and Janet) Hawkins of McLean, Jeff (and Brenda) Hawkins of Atlanta and Greg Hawkins of McLean; one daughter, Linda (and Brad) May of Overland Park, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, Perry (and Angel) Hawkins, Melissa (and Richie) Fralick, Alex Hawkins, Matthew Hawkins, Amanda May, Taryn May, Kyle May, Chelsea Hawkins, Shelby Hawkins and Caitlin Hawkins; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Hawkins and Blake Hawkins; two brothers, John Hawkins of Atlanta and Eugene Hawkins of McLean; and one sister, Shirley Schaefer of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a member of the Atlanta American Legion Post 341 and a lifetime honorary member of the Mount Hope/Funks Grove Fire Protection District.

Memorial contributions may be made to the McLean Christian Church or the Mount Hope Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
