Vernon Johnson

Vernon "Smiley" Johnson, 92, of Mason City died at 12:20 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, with the Rev. William Boyce and the Rev. Robert Paddack officiating.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the funeral home.

Johnson retired from Caterpillar in East Peoria after 34 years.

He was born Sept. 16, 1908, in Greenview to John Henry and Martha (Stone) Johnson. He married Phyllis Hyde on Nov. 2, 1935, in Mason City. She died Aug. 14, 1979.

Surviving are one son, James (Virgie) Johnson of Mason City; five daughters, Vernalee (Don) Windsor of Mason City, Patricia (Robert) Thorpe of Tucson, Ariz., Agnes Allison of Lincoln, Judith (Don) Douglas of Mason City and Jane (Kenneth) Danner of Mason City; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to Mason City Area Nursing Home or Mason City Christian Church.
